BASIC ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT The Naval Architect shall be responsible for handling all naval architecture related tasks for the Brunswick Boat Group Technology Center.
Primary responsibilities will be for Boston Whaler, Sea Ray, and Brunswick ACES initiatives; however, this position will also support other Brunswick Boat Group brands as needed.
This includes weights, hydrostatics, powering, stability, on-water testing and validation, compliance, and certification requirements for current products, new product development, and research and development programs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Execute the development & validation of naval architecture and other product systems in support of project scope, timing & cost objectives per established engineering practices & industry regulations.
Systems and components will include but not be limited to: performance predictions, hull proportions and sizing, weight estimates, stability analysis, propulsion integration, and as required: fuel, exhaust, steering, bilge, tankage & general arrangement development.
Communicates with cross functional departments including design, engineering, manufacturing, and vendors.
Applies design intent, engineering specifications, program objectives, and manufacturing input to system and component design, layout and documentation.
Create adequate and accurate documentation to support prototyping and manufacturing including but not limited to CAD models, bills of materials, construction drawings, and process work instructions.
Facilitate reviews and area buy offs per project scope, timing, and cost objectives.
Conduct detailed weight studies of design proposals and monitor weight distribution during design and engineering activities.
Perform hydrostatic and hydrodynamic analysis of all new models.
Complete performance predictions, analysis, and comparisons including monitoring and evaluating competitive performance information.
Execute or support design and layout of propulsion systems with the Mechanical Systems engineering team.
Performs initial performance runs of new models and participates in offshore endurance testing as required.
Collect performance test data using data acquisition software and select propellers that provide the best overall performance for the customer.
Provide troubleshooting and support to prototype assembly and manufacturing organizations.
Support customer service with performance related issues.
Communicate risks to project schedule, cost, and scope for responsible systems and components.
Monitors fabrication and installation activities of prototype components to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design intent.
Support production facilities with failure analysis and resolution when warranty or quality issues are identified.
Maintain working knowledge and be versed in the interpretations of applicable government and industry standards including CFR, ABYC, NMMA, and ISO as they pertain to vessel design and construction.
JOB REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's Degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, or related discipline required.
3 – 5 years’ experience in marine product design/engineering with a focus on planing craft and composite structures preferred.
Knowledge of advanced hull designs, multi-hulls, and hydrofoils desirable.
Computer aided design experience required (Siemens NX, Rhinoceros, and Orca3D preferred).
3D Solid and free-surface modeling skills required.
Experience with scale model testing and Computational Fluid Dynamics a plus.
Manufacturing experience/knowledge preferred.
Strong analytical skills, including expertise with spreadsheets.
Excellent written and verbal skills.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Able to handle multiple projects efficiently and effectively.
Strong attention to detail.
Must have good judgment skills and working knowledge of tooling, prototype and construction procedures.
Boating experience desired.
Must be willing to travel (5% minimum).
